Delivered by Westminster City Council and Transport for London, and supported by the Baker Street Quarter Partnership, the project aimed to reduce the dominance of traffic along both Baker Street and Gloucester Place.
The streets switched to 2-way traffic following the removal of the gyratory system in Gloucester Place and Baker Street in February 2019 and the improvements were noticeable within just a few days of the changeover. Work continued until Autumn and the two streets now benefit from reduced traffic, lower noise and reduced vehicle speeds. Safety improvements have been delivered at every junction.
A post-implementation review will measure traffic flow and air quality, both of which are expected to have improved. A programme of more minor street interventions is now underway to build on this more structural change and this includes schemes for Portman Square, Manchester Square, Duke Street and Old Quebec Street.
