Meet Olivia!
This week is National Apprenticeship Week and to celebrate we have interviewed our apprentice Olivia who works in the corporate team at The Portman Estate.
Olivia is studying towards a BPP Level 3 Business Administration qualification and has been at The Portman Estate since October 2023.
Why did you choose to do an apprenticeship?
I struggled somewhat with the approach to learning provided by school, as I often found it difficult to concentrate or became easily distracted during verbal instruction, which was the predominant teaching style. I also struggled to retain knowledge through this style. I found that learning through hands-on experience, supplemented by additional support from others, was the most efficient way for me to learn, as it allowed me to actively engage and navigate through the material. An apprenticeship has enabled me to do just that, providing me with the opportunity to learn both the theoretical and practical aspects of my role. When the time comes that my apprenticeship draw to a close I am confident about my next steps, knowing that I possess both the knowledge and experience to progress.
What does your apprenticeship entail?
I am based in the corporate team, where I provide support to three different teams: Corporate Administration, Marketing, and Human Resources. My role encompasses a wide range of tasks, from updating and reconstructing internal resources and presentations to visiting establishments with marketing resources out on the Estate. Each day brings new challenges and opportunities for growth, as every project and task assigned to me helps develop my skill set and refine my knowledge.
What do you enjoy the most in your apprenticeship?
I consider myself extremely privileged to be working in such a diverse role with exposure to three different teams as it gives me the opportunity to experience work in a unique perspective and allow me to gain an insight into what my passions and interests really are.
What’s the most valuable skill you’ve learnt so far?
During my apprenticeship, I’ve learned the importance of communication, particularly in my role where I support three different teams alongside my studies. I am always honest and open, clearly expressing what tasks I feel comfortable undertaking and seeking support from my managers and colleagues when needed. Additionally, I make effective use of my course provider, actively participating in webinars and asking questions to address any areas where I lack confidence.
Where do you see your apprenticeship taking you next?
This apprenticeship has highlighted to me my passion for Human Resources, particularly in Employee Relations. With this self-awareness, I can now seek out resources to further my progression in this field. Upon completion of my apprenticeship, I will gain a Level 3 Qualification in Business Administration, positioning me well to either transition directly into an administrative role or pursue further studies, aiming for a Level 5 or 7 Qualification.
Do you have any advice for anyone looking into apprenticeships?
LinkedIn is an incredible platform for networking and connecting with others such as recruiters or employees/employers in the field you’re interested in. I would advise you reach out to as many people as possible and ask them to provide any advice or insight into how get into an apprenticeship and what tools and resources may be available to you. I would also recommend making your online presence attractive by adding in experience and a biography expressing your desire to do an apprenticeship as this is how I was approached for my role.
